What is Rule 1 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall uphold and observe the rule of law, promote, and foster the course of justice, maintain a high standard of professional conduct, and shall not engage in any conduct which is unbecoming of a legal practitioner.
What is Rule 2 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall not knowingly do any act or make any omission or engage a person who is unsuitable for admission by reason of his moral character, or insufficient qualification or for any other reason.
What is Rule 3 of the RPC?
A lawyer shall not aid the unauthorized practice of law, permit his name to be used in other to aid the unauthorized practice of law, share legal fees with a non lawyer(rule 53 is an exception) and sign a document prepared by a non-lawyer as if it was prepared by him.
What is Rule 4 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall avoid intermediaries in the practice of law(charitable societies and other institutions helping the needy are not included)
What is Rule 5 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall not form partnership with a non lawyer or an unqualified lawyer and where such lawyer practices alone, he shall not hold himself out as a partner.
Note:
1.The name of a deceased partner can be used, so far it does not lead to deception.
2.Where a member of the firm becomes a judge, his name shall be removed.
What is Rule 6 of the RPC 2023?
Retirement from judicial position or public employment. A judicial officer that has retired shall not act as an advocate on behalf of anyone before a court.
What is Rule 7 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall not engage in business unless permitted by the bar council(farming is permitted)
What is Rule 8 of the RPC 2023?
Salaried employment
-A lawyer cannot appear as an advocate or prepare pleadings for their employer, except for legal officers in a Government Department(A director also cannot appear as an advocate for his company)
What is Rule 9 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer must pay annual practicing fees not later than 31st of March of every year(for newly enrolled lawyers, the deadline is a month after enrollment).
What is Rule 10 of the RPC 2023?
A lawyer shall not sign a legal document without affixing the NBA seal and stamp.
