RU Flashcards
Fibrous Capsule is
Protective outer casing
Renal cortex is
superficial region containing renal corpuscles, blood vessels and cortical collecting ducts
Renal column
medullary band of renal cortex between renal pyramids
renal medulla
innermost part of the kidney. contains loop of Henle and collecting ducts of nephrons
Renal pyramids
triangular sections of renal medulla
Kidney lobe
consists of the renal pyramid, overlying area of renal cortex and adjacent renal columns
minor calyx
collects urine produced from a single lobe
major calyx
formed by the fusion of 4-5 minor calyces
renal pelvis
collects urine from major calyces is connected to the ureter
hilum
central fissure where blood vessels, nerves and the ureter pass
ureter
tube which drains urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder
Where does the renal artery arises from
absominal aorta
order of organs of the urinary system
- Kidney
- Ureter
- bladder
- urethra
what is the function of the urinary system
eliminate excess water, salts and metabolic waste through the production of urine
three regions of the kidney gross structure
cortex
medulla
pelvis
what is the nephron
microscopic functional unit of the kidney
what is the function of the nephron
- Filter blood
- Selectively reabsorbs/secrets
- Excreted urine
what are the two types of nephrons
- Cortical Nephron (85%)
2. Juxtamedullary Nephron (15%)
what is the cortical nephron function
- Responsible for most of the regulatory functions of the kidney
what is the function of the Juxtamedullary nephron
- Play crucial role in establishing conditions essential to water conservation and production
nephron: renal corpuscle function
- Mixture of water and solutes become the filtrate
nephron: Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT)
- Reabsorbs the bulk of nutrients from filtrate : water, organic nutrients, sodium chloride ions
nephron: Descending limb of nephron loop function
Water is resorbed by diffusion in loop
nephron: ascending limb of nephron loop
Na + and Cl- ions
- Thick wall prevents water resorption
