What is RTI
A
- multi-tiered approach aimed at providing quality instruction, services, and intervention to struggling students at increasing levels of intensity.
- involves frequent progress monitoring of student’s response to instruction and intervention
- prevention +intervention + identification= RTI
- Prevention- of learning difficulties
- Intervention- when students are not learning as expected
- Identification- of students who need intervention

How is RTI different?
A
- RTI is a change from traditional “wait to fail” model (the ability-achievement discrepancy approach for identification of learning disabilities) to a model of early identification and intervention.

Prevention
A
- attempts to prevent long term underachievement and special education placement through intervention that focuses on child’s need
- RTI is engaging instruction using research based approaches. Can prevent need to go into special education

Intervention
A
- Must be high quality, high interest, pertain to student’s learning needs and it is based on EBP (based on assessment results)
- Assessment for intervention: screenings, monitoring progess, and diagnostic evaluations.

Identification
A
- 2004 IDEA is to identify students eligible for special education, early identification is recommended.

Tiers of RTI
A
- Tier 1 -core instruction ( largest population, least intense)
- Tier 2- targeted group intervention (smaller group, more intense than core)
- Tier 3- Intensive, individualized intervention (smallest group, most intense)
