A
-“The Picture Exchange Communication System or PECS approach is a modified applied behavior analysis program designed for early nonverbal symbolic communication training. It is not a program designed to teach speech, although the latter is encouraged indirectly and some children begin to spontaneously use speech while enrolled in the PECS program.”

- The child learns to generalize the new skill by using it in different places, with different
people, and across distances.

-The child learns to select from two or pictures that are now placed in a
communication book.

- Sentence Structure
- The child learns to construct simple sentences using an “I want” picture followed
by a picture of their request.

- The child learns to use pictures to
respond to “What do you want?” or
“What do you see?”

- The child is taught to comment in
response to these questions and make up their own sentences.
