- we rmr j’s sacrifice during holy communion, use bread of wine and repeat words of J: bread and wine become body and blood of jesus through transubstantiation
“he took a loaf of bread, blessed it and broke it and gave it to them saying” this is my body”

- reminded of covenant between God and jews and a a new covennat between jesus and man
“this is my blood of the covenant, which will be poured out for many”

A
- j’s human side: feels vunerbale and isolated “remove this cup from me, yet not what i want, but what you want”
- j’s closeness w God and how he accepsts his will “abba” (father in aramaic), shows how c’s should accept God’s will too

A
- j’s trial was unfair:
-> not allowed to pass death sentence, no second hearing, false witnesses lied (“some stood up and gave false testimony against him”) - j claimed full authority of God
“Are you the messiah, the son of the blessed one?” “I am”

3.4 who was to blame for j’s conviction?
A
- sanhedrin: determined to get j arrested, believed he was guilty of blasphemy but changed it to treason in order to get him sentenced to death
- pilate: had responsibility to uphold justice yet let an innocent man be sent to death to please a crowd
“ so pilate, wishing to please the crowd, released barabbas for them” - crowd: shouted for his death
- j himself: could have defended himself and said v little to pilate
“jesus made no further reply and pilate was amazed”

3.5 what can we learn from the crucifixion and death of j?
A
- his death removed the barrier of sin between man and God “ and the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom”
- he came for all “surely this man was Gods son!”, a gentile understood j’s divinity
- fulfilled the old testament prophecies
- his human side: “My God My God, why have you forsaken me?” felt separated from God in his last moments

A
- proof of life after death: jesus overpowered death, c’s believe that everyone will rise after death and the KoG will be established
- shows c’s that good is more powerful than evil
