  • j’s human side: feels vunerbale and isolated “remove this cup from me, yet not what i want, but what you want”
  • j’s closeness w God and how he accepsts his will “abba” (father in aramaic), shows how c’s should accept God’s will too

  • j’s trial was unfair:
    -> not allowed to pass death sentence, no second hearing, false witnesses lied (“some stood up and gave false testimony against him”)
  • j claimed full authority of God
    “Are you the messiah, the son of the blessed one?” “I am”

3.4 who was to blame for j’s conviction?

A
  • sanhedrin: determined to get j arrested, believed he was guilty of blasphemy but changed it to treason in order to get him sentenced to death
  • pilate: had responsibility to uphold justice yet let an innocent man be sent to death to please a crowd
    “ so pilate, wishing to please the crowd, released barabbas for them”
  • crowd: shouted for his death
  • j himself: could have defended himself and said v little to pilate
    “jesus made no further reply and pilate was amazed”

3.5 what can we learn from the crucifixion and death of j?

A
  • his death removed the barrier of sin between man and God “ and the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom”
  • he came for all “surely this man was Gods son!”, a gentile understood j’s divinity
  • fulfilled the old testament prophecies
  • his human side: “My God My God, why have you forsaken me?” felt separated from God in his last moments
