16
Q

Why do Dentures fractures?

A

Impact
Acrylic in thin sections
Work hardening of metal
Parafunctional habits
Occlusion
Soft linings
Bonding between tooth & base acrylic

17
Q

How do you fix a midline fracture of complete dentures?

A

If fractures pieces can be located together, disinfect and send to the lab
-No impression needed

18
Q

How do you repair a denture if part of the acrylic flange is lost?

A

Impression taken with fractured denture in mouth, disinfected, case poured and new acrylic processed into defect

19
Q

When are strengtheners used in dentures?

A

In patients that repeatedly break dentures or patients with parafunctional habits

20
Q

What is ICP?

A

Intercuspal position
The complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth independent of condylar position

21
Q

What is RCP?

A

Retruded contact position
Guided occlusal relationship occurring at the most retruded position of the condyles in the joint cavities
Reproducible position

22
Q

What are index teeth?

A

Contacting facets of teeth in the intercuspal position
Need to have enough meeting to achieve a stable occlusion

23
Q

What is the most commonly used articulator?

A

Average value (fixed condylar articulator)
Condylar guidance track is fixed at an average value

24
Q

Why reline dentures?

A

Fitting surface is inadequate but otherwise the denture is okay

25
Q

Why rebase a denture?

A

When you want to keep the occlusal surface but change the fitting and polished surface

26
Q

What is the method for relining a denture?

A

Remove undercuts from dentures fitting surface using acrylic bur
If underextended can add greenstick where needed
Functional impression- Light bodied silicone in denture fitting surface and get pt to bite down as take the impression

27
Q

What to write on denture lab card for reline?

A

Please pour up impression in 100% dental stone using reline impression with denture provided. Please mount upper to cast and create a self cure PMMA reline to change the impression surface.

28
Q

What is the first stage of replica dentures?

A

Place putty in denture tray
Sit denture in putty
Ensure that the phalanges are level with the material
Cut notches in the top to differentiate the two halves
Cover putty with vaseline
Place putty over fitting surface

29
Q

What is the second stage of replica dentures?

A

Take functional impression with light bodied silicone on the fitting surface whilst taking bite registration
Check occlusion and FWS

30
Q

What are the local measures to treat denture induced stomatitis?

A

Brush the palate daily
Clean dentures thoroughly and give denture hygiene instruction
Leave their dentures out as often as possible
New dentures once problem has resolved

31
Q

What is the treatment for denture induced stomatitis?

A

Miconazole- send 80g tube, apply pea-sized amount to fitting surface of upper denture after food 4x daily
Fluconazole 50mg tablets 7 capsules 1x daily
Nystatin- oral suspension send 30ml, 1ml after food 4xdaily for 7 days. Pt has to rinse and then hold suspension in mouth for 5 mins before swallowing.

32
Q

What is denture induced stomatiits?

A

Inflammatory condition caused by overgrowth of candida in the mouth

33
Q

What can cause denture stomatitis?

A

Poor oral hygiene
Ill-fitting dentures
Lack of regular cleaning
