How would you describe a biopsy to a patient?
Small amount of tissue is removed so that it can be looked at under a microscope. Carried out under LA and may require stitches which will dissolve
What are the different types of biopsy used?
Fine needle aspirate- abscesses, cysts, blood, salivary gland swellings
Excisional- lesion removed
Incisional- representative sample
Punch- removes core of tissue
What do you do when sending a sample to a pathology lab?
Put in 10% formalin
Don’t place on damp swab- distorts
Suture to help orientate
Ensure no leaks

Patients name

Sample present

What information do you include in pathology form?
All information possible about patient- DoB, gender, address, where report is to go to
Tick histopathology
When sample was collected
What sample is - basic description of type and lesion
Clinical details- describe lesion, MH, provisional diagnosis
