How long is an RP allowed to be absent from the pharmacy?
2h in 24h period.
Does the absence time count for each pharmacist in a day or the RP as a whole?
If > 1 pharmacist is present it is a combined absence from RP duties.
What 3 things should the RP notice detail?
- Name of RP
- GPhC number of RX
- Fact the RP is in charge of the pharmacy at that time.
What 3 ways can the pharmacy record be kept?
- Written
- Electronic

Is the pharmacy record a legal requirement?
YES - shows who was responsible for pharmacy on any date at any time.
What 5 details must be recorded in pharmacy record?
- RP name
- RP GPhC number
- Date and time RP signed in.
- Date and time RP signed out.
- Any absences
How long must the owner/superintendent keep the RP record?
5 years
What 9 areas of procedure is the RP responsible for?
- Medicinal product - ordering, storage, prep, sale, delivery, destruction etc.
- Advice - When other staff can give advice to patients.
- Competency - ID of staff who are competent to perform certain roles.
- Arrangements - Record keeping of arrangements.
- Absence - Arrangements to apply in absence of RP
- Change in RP - Steps if there is a change in RP at premises.
- Complaints procedure.
- Incident procedure.
- Procedure change - How changes to the procedure are to be notified to staff.
How often should pharmacy procedures be reviewed?
Every 2 years or following an incident.
What 3 arrangements must be in place for absence of RP?
- Absence only allowed if pharmacy can run safely/effectively.
- RP must be contactable by pharmacy staff.
- If 1 and 2 cannot be met, need to arrange another pharmacist to be contactable.
In absence of an RP - can a professional check of an Rx be completed?
No - RP required legally under NHS pharm legislation.
In absence of an RP - can sale/supply of P meds occur?
No - requires physical presence of RP to advise/intervene.
In absence of an RP - sale/supply POMs - patient or delivery driver?
No - requires physical presence of RP to advise/intervene.
In absence of an RP - supply of meds under PGD?
No - requires physical presence of RP.
In absence of an RP - wholesale of meds?
No - requires physical presence of RP.
In absence of an RP -
emergency supply of med at request or patient or HCP?
No - requires physical presence of RP to advise/intervene.
In absence of an RP - assembly of prescriptions?
Yes - supervision in this context may not require physical presence of pharmacist.
What 5 things counts as “assembly of Rx”
- Generating a dispensing label.
- Taking medicine off shelf.
- Assembly of item
- Labelling containers with dispensing label.
- Accuracy checking.
In absence of an RP - sale of GSL medicines?
YES - as long as undertaken by suitably trained staff and within SOP.

yes - but consideration needs to be made for what will happen to undelivered meds (especially CDs which cannot be returned without RP present).
