Routing Chapter 7 Flashcards
What is Port Address Translation (PAT)?
Share single public IP address with a group of computers on a internal network using ports
What is Network Address Translation (NAT)?
Means of translating a systems IP address into another address before sending it out to another larger network
What is an Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP)?
Outdated way of connection autonomous systems to the internet, replaced by Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
What is Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)?
Enables groups of routers to share routing information so that efficient loop free route can be established. This a Hybrid protocol, primarily exterior but can be used internally
Distance Vector
What is Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)?
Interior gateway routing protocol developed for ip networks based on the shortest past first, or link state algorithm. Corrects link failures and creates convergence. Most common protocol of choice for large networks
Link State
V2 Ipv4
V3 Ipv6
What are areas in OSPF?
Administrative groupings of interconnected routers to help control how routers reroute traffic if a link drops
What is the backbone area?
All traffic between Areas has to go through the back bone, central area and it gets assigned Area ID of Zero 0.0.0.0
Which Cables are used to configure a router?
Yost Cable
Roll Over Cable
Console Cable
For Cisco Devices
What is Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)?
Cisco version of EGP, Hybrid using both Distance Vector and Link state Protocol
What is Routing Information Protocol (RIP)?
Outdated Routing protocol with several short comings
Distance Vector
What is a distance vector?
Set of routing protocols that calculates total costs to get to a specific network id and compares that cost to the total cost of all the other routes to get to that same network id.
What are some routing protocols used for interior networks?
RIP Routing Information Protocol
OSPF Open Shortest Path First
IS-IS Intermediate System to Intermediate System
EIGRP Enhanced Interiror Gateway Routing Protocol
What is Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS)?
A link state dynamic routing protocol similar to but not as popular as OSPF. Support for Ipv6 and is defacto standard for ISPs
Link State
What is the best way to connect to a router for configuration/modification?
Typically you would SSH into the router over a network but if that is unavailable, directly connecting to the network using a rollover cable/ console cable
What is link state?
Type of dynamic routing protocol that announces only changes to routing tables.
