IPv6 Chapter 12 Flashcards
Does IPv6 use NAT?
No, because its no longer needed due to the massive amount of addresses IPv6 supports
What does a NAT64 Gateway do?
Used to allow translation for an IPv6 only network to access IPv4 networks.
What does every Link-Local address begin with?
fe80:0000:0000:0000
Define Link Local
IPv6 address that a computer gives itself after first booting. Used for communicating on a local network.
Define Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP)
IPv6 protocol that performs the same functions as ARP and plays a roll in features SLAAC, consist of 5 ICMP control message types which are: Neighbor Solicitation, Neighbor Advertisement, Router Solicitation, Router Advertisement, Redirect.
What is the difference between Advertising and Soliciting in terms of IPv6?
Solicitation is finding a mac address given its IPv6 Address
Advertising IPv6 packet sent in response to a multicast neighbor solicitation packet, telling the requesting system the MAC address the system it solicited.
Solicitation happens first then Advertisement is sent as a response
Define a redirect packet
Enables a router to tell a host that there is a better router to use for traffic to a given destination. Comes in to play only if there are multiple routers used on a network
Define DHCPv6
A Stateful IPv6 server Works similarly to an IPv4 server
A Stateless IPv6 server provides deconfiguration information and lets the host pick its own address via stateless address autoconfiguration. AKA SLAAC
Does it without the need for DHCPv6 Server
