Cabling and Topology Ch2 Flashcards
Bus
Uses single cable to connect all computers in a line
Ring
Connects all computers with a Ring of cable
Star or Hub and Spoke
Central connection box for all computers on the network
Hybrid
Mix between two topologies
Mesh
Every computer connects to every other computer by two or more routes
Partial Mesh
At least 2 machines have redundant connections. Not all computers connected by 2 or more routes.
Coaxial Cable
Central Copper conductor wire surrounded by insulated material which is surrounded by braided metal shield
Primarily used to connect modem to ISP
Also used for TV connections
RG-59
Primarily used for TVS network
75 Omns
RG-6
Typically used for networking
75 Omns
RG Rating Stands for what?
Radio Guide Rating
Twinaxial
Type of Coaxial cable that contains two central copper conductors wrapped around a central shield. Used as substitute for short fiber connections, short distances ex. rack between switches.
Much Cheaper then Fiber
Used this way its called a Direct Attached Cable (DAC)
Define Direct Attached Cable (DAC)
Short fiber connection used between equipment on a rack.
Twisted Pair
Most common type of cable used in network. Consists of twisted pairs of cables bundled together in a common jacket.
Each pair works as team either transmitting or receiving data.
Helps to reduce crosstalk
Define STP
Shielded Twisted Pair
UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair
CAT
Category Ratings, officially rated in Mgz. Indicates highest frequency cable can handle
Cat 5
Max Freq Max Band Status
100 Mhz 100 Mbps No longer
Cat 5e
Max Freq Max Band Status
100 Mhz 1 Gbps Yes
NEEDSCONTEXT
Cat 6
Max Freq Max Band Status
250 Mhz 10 Gbps Yes
Can use full 100 Meter length when used with 10/100/1000 BaseT networks
10GBaseT Networks Limited to 55 Meters
Most new cable installations use Cat 6
Cat 6a
Max Freq Max Band Status
500 Mhz 10 Gbps Yes
Can use full 100 Meter length with networks up to 10GBaseT
Not limited by network speed over its length
Cat 7
Max Freq Max Band Status
600 Mhz 10+ Gbps No
Fiber
Transmits light rather then electricity. Makes it attractive for high EMI areas and/or long distance transmission.
Made up of 4 compontents
Glass Fiber - Core
Cladding - Makes light reflect down fiber
Buffer Material - Gives Strength
Insulating Jacket - Insulates and Protects Cable
Cat 8
Max Freq Max Band Status
2000Mhz 25-40 Gbps No
ST Connector
Straight Tip or Snap and twist
Bayonet Style
SC Connector
Subscriber Connector or Standard Connector or Siemon Connector
Stick and Click
LC Connector
Local Connector or Lucent Connector
Little Connector
MT-RJ Connector
Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack or Media Termination - recommended jack
Latch, gendered
Duplex Node Connections
Plenum
Empty space between ceiling tile and concrete ceiling above it
Cables rated for Plenum means it wont create noxious fumes
If it goes in the wall, make it Plenum
Fire Rating
Ratings developed to define risk of network burning and creating noxious fumes and smoke
IEEE
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Define frames, speeds, distances, and types of cabling to use in a network environment
