place baby on back on firm fitting mattress in a crib with current safety standards met, remove other things from crib and use a sleeper or sleeping clothing as alternative to blankets, make sure babies head is uncovered during sleep, no waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, etc to sleep
