Rotter - Locus Of Control Flashcards
Method
A review article
The sample used
Initially 6 pieces of research into individual perceptions of ability to control outcomes on reinforcement
Results
Rotter found that results from the studies reviewed consistently showed the participant who felt they had control over situation were more likely to show behaviours that would enable them to cope with potential threat, than participants who thought they had a chance
What was concluded
rotter concluded that’s LOC would affect many of our behaviours, not just health
Factors such as environment were influential in giving up smoking
Aim
To investigate the LOC theory
What is the LOC theory
Looks at the extent to which individuals feel that they can control events that affect them.
Healthy behaviours are heavily influenced by an individual’s perception of the extent to which they have control over
What at internal and external LOC
Internal: feel personally able to influence events
External: factors outside their control influence events
What are the 3 dimensions of LOC - multi dimension
- Internality: perceives internal control over health
- Chance: belief that chance/fate can influence health / external
- Powerful others: control of health professionals
