Rossum 1966 Flashcards
What did Rossum 1966 argue?
Argued that sz is due to a dopamine disregulation. However, it’s not specified what part of the brain the disregulation is in.
What study supports this?
Ten et al injected rats with amphetamines and the rats showed psychotic symptoms which supports Rossum.
- As animals are used in the study the results aren’t generalisable because humans and animals are different.
- She needs to accept the evolutionary continuity argument.
What is L Dopa?
L Dopa is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson’s is cause by a lack of dopamine in the brain. L Dopa gives people with Parkinson’s positive sz symptoms as it’s too much dopamine. Acceptable quantities of L Dopa can reduce Parkinson’s.
What did Wise and Stein find?
Found that schizophrenics that died in accidents had abnormally low levels of beta-hydroxylase which is and enzyme used in the break down of dopamine after its released. So it supports Rossum.
Why might a person have excess dopamine?
- Too much dopamine is manufactured in the presynaptic cell.
- Too much dopamine released for the presynaptic cell.
- Not enough enzyme in the synaptic cleft to break down the dopamine.
- Leftover molecules aren’t recycled and left in the gap.
- Too many reception sites on the post synaptic cleft.
- Receptor sites are overly sensitive.
What was chlorpromazine?
First of the anti-psychotics called typicals which worked by blocking the dopamine receptions without activating them. (Blocks D2 receptors).
What do amphetamines do?
Enhance dopamine activity and can cause sz like symptoms.
