ROS Flashcards
Give 5 examples of ROS
hydrogen peroxide, superoxide, hydrogen radicals and peroxynitrite and hydrochlorous acid
How is ROS formed in the body
1- mitochondria during aerobic respiration
2- NADPH oxidase NOX formation to kill phagocytosed bacteria 3- metabolism of long chain fatty acids in peroxisomes produce ROS as a byproduct 4- radiation or other toxic exposure
What is the half life of ROS’ and why is it significant
Have a short half life so do not travel far to exert damage
What will ROS exposure lead it
Can oxidize protein (aggregations), DNA (mutations), lipids (PM damage), and also CHOs
What are some of the protective mechanisms against peroxidases?
SODS, catalyses, peroxidases, vitamin E, beta-carotene and ascorbic acid
