ROR Situations Flashcards
You see a sailing vessel dead ahead, how would you determine if it is to be classed as a PDV?
The vessel would be displaying a black cone inverted apex.
You are navigating in restricted visibility and here 1 long blast followed by 4 short, what vessel is this?
Pilot Vessel
You are navigating in restricted visibility and here 1 long blast followed by 2 short, what type of vessel may this be?
NUC, RAM, CBD, Sailing, Fishing, Towing/Pushing
You are navigating in restricted visibility and hear 1 long blast followed by 2 short, immediately after you hear 1 long blast followed by 3 short. What does this indicate?
A vessel towing and the towed vessel being manned also.
You are a 130m PDV and wish to anchor in restricted visibility, what signals must you sound?
A rapid ringing of the bell in the forepart of the vessel for 5 seconds followed by sounding of the gong in the afterpart of the vessel for 5 seconds. In addition 1S + 1L + 1S may be sounded.
You are a 130m PDV and have run aground in restricted visibility, what signals must you sound and lights to display?
In addition to the rapid ringing of the bell for 5 seconds, 3 distinct strikes on the bell before and after the ringing followed by sounding of the gong in afterpart of vessel for 5 seconds. Lights to be displayed is 2 all round red lights + all round white light in the fore part + all round white light near the stern lower than the fore light.
You are a 95m PDV and have run aground in restricted visibility, what signals must you sound and lights to display?
In addition to the rapid ringing of the bell for 5 seconds, 3 distinct strikes on the bell before and after the ringing. Lights to be displayed is 2 all round red lights + all round white light in the fore part + all round white light near the stern lower than the fore light.
You are a 98m PDV and wish to anchor is restricted visibility, what signals must you sound?

You see the sternlight of another vessel dead ahead, you wish to overtake on the starboard side, Actions?
Ensure my starboard side is clear.
Sound = 2L + 1S.
Wait to for aknowledgment = 1L + 1S x2.
Ensure my starboard side is clear.
If clear alter course to starboard staying well clear of vessel overtaken.
Continue to monitor until well past and clear.
A PDV is apporaching on your starboard side, action?
Take a series of compass bearings to ascertain if a risk of collision exists.
If a ROC exists ,this is a crossing situation so as per R15 i will avoid crossing ahead of the other vessel and take early and substantial action as per R16.
Ensure my starboard side is clear, Sounds 1 short blast, alter course to starboard passing astern of the other vessel, continue to monitor until well past and clear.
A PDV is apporaching on your port side, action?
Take a series of compass bearings to ascertain if a risk of collision exists.
If a ROC, This is a crossing situation so as per R15 i’am the stand on vessel. Complying with R17 i will maintain my course and speed and monitor, if no action taken by give way vessel, sound 5 short rapid blasts, if no action taken sound 1 short blast alter course to stbd or slow down.
You identify a PDV ahead via AIS, what sound signal would you expect to hear?
If making way = 1 prolonged blast intervals n.e 2 mins. If making no way through the water = 2 prolonged blasts n.e 2 min
