What are the meanings of Heel, List, Roll, Pitch, Yaw
Heel is a temporary inclination caused by wind, waves or a ship’s turn. List is a permanent inclination caused by off centre weight. Roll is the side to side rotation of a vessel on its longitudinal axis (X). Pitch is the Vessels up and down motion about its transverse axis (Y) Yaw is the vessels tuning rotation about its vertical axis (Z)
What is the difference between the terms watertight and weathertight doors.
Weathertight doors are primarily above the waterline and prevent an ingress of water from the outside to inside. Watertight doors are designed to prevent water ingress from both sides ensuring that the watertight integrity of the adjacent compartment is not lost.
What does the term Gross Tonnage refer to?
Gross Tonnage is the total measure of a ships internal volume.
What does the term Net Tonnage refer to?
Net Tonnage is the volume of the ships total cargo carrying capacity.
What does the term Displacement refer to?
Displacement is the ship’s total weight and cargo.
Lightweight is the ship’s weight not including cargo when it is empty. Deadweight is the total weight a ship is able to carry.
What does the term Lightweight Tonnage refer to?
Lightweight is the ship’s weight not including cargo/fuel/ballast/supplies.
How would you obtain the Net tonnage from Gross tonnage?
Subtract the volume of the spaces not used for carrying cargo from GT
What does the term Deadweight Tonnage refer to?
Deadweight tonnage is the weight (in tons) of all the cargo, fuel, dry provisions, supplies, etc
How would you obtain the DWT?
Subtracting the Lightweight tonnage from Displacement will provide you with DWT.
What is the purpose of the Plimsoll line?
The Plimsoll Line exists to ensure there is sufficient freeboard for the cargo carried.
What do the plimsoll marks indicate?
The marks indicate the amount of cargo which can be carried dependant on the weather conditions and on the density of water.
What are the different zones to be aware of on the Plimsoll line?
The Plimsoll line marks Progress from lowest density Tropical Fresh, Fresh, Tropical, Summer, Winter to Winter North Atlantic.
What is the underpinning legislation regarding plimsoll line?
The international Load Line Convention 2003.
You are joining a ship as 3rd officer, what will you do once onboard?
Locate the CO. Hand over all necessary paperwork and obtain muster number. Identify lifejacket in cabin and muster station. Conduct familiarisation tour locating all LSA and FFA equipment and associated manuals. Locate exit points and emergency escape routes. Undergo familiarisation with bridge equipment - radar - ECDIS etc. Check security level Familiarise with loading procedures
What are the closing time periods required for watertight doors? What are the different classes of watertight doors?
All the power operated doors must be capable of closing simultaneously from bridge and Ship Control Center (SCC) in not more than 60 seconds when the ship is in upright condition. The door shall have an approximate uniform rate of closure under power. The closure time, from the time the door begins to close to the time it closes completely shall be in no case less than 20 seconds or more than 40 seconds with the ship in upright condition n case of hand operation of the door, during power failure, the door must be closed within 90 seconds.
