Describe a tap root
A main root with smaller roots branching from it
Tap roots extend a considerable length

No main root
All roots are multi branched and originate at the base of the stem
Roots occupy a large area of shallow soil and so prevent soil erosion
Describe adventurous roots
These are roots that grow from other parts of the plant, usually a stem but also from a leaf

Root hairs greatly increases the surface area of the roots, bringing them into co tqvt with note water and nutrients
