Root Resorption Flashcards
main post-trauma complications
- pulp necrosis and infection
- pulp canal obliteration
- root resorption
- breakdown of marginal gingiva and bone
pulp canal obliteration
response of a vital pulp, progressive hard tissue formation within cavity
gradual narrowing of pulp chamber and canal, total or partial obliteration
external root resorption types
surface
external infection related IRR (external inflammtory resorption)
cervical
ankylosis RR
what is external infection related IRR
response to trauma, non-vital, loss of PDL, potentially pulp
diagnosis = indistinct root surface, root canal tramlines intact
management = remove stimulus, endo
cervical resorption
what is ankylosis related RR
fusion between dentine or cementum of root and surrounding bone, obliteration of PDL
normal repair does not occur
cause = severe luxation or avulsion
diagnosis = ragged root outline, no obvious PDL space
plan for loss
internal root resorption type
internal infection related IRR
what is internal infection IRR
due to progressive pulp necrosis
initiated in pulp space with loss of dentine
cause - pulpal infection, PDL infection, ortho pressure, impacted tooth
diagnosis = symmetrical expansion of RC walls ‘ballooning’, tramlines of root canal indistinct, root surface intact
tx - remove stimulus, endo, plan for loss
