Root of the neck Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the root of the neck
Anterior- Top of manubrium and superior border of clavicle
Posterior- Body of T1 and superior margin of scapula to coracoid process
Lateral- First pair of ribs and costal cartlidges
Inferior- superior thoracic aperture and axillary inlets
What does the root of the neck lead to
The axillary inlets as arterial and venous structures pass through the root of the neck to get there
roots of brachial plexus pass throughh as well
Describe, briefly, the form, position and coverings of the apex of the lung, including the pleurallayersand thesuprapleuralmembrane
the summit of the lung also in root of neck
covered by cervical pleura which forms a cap- the cupola
The cupola is reinforced with suprapleural membrane
It attaches to the internal surface of rib1 and transvers process of C7
What are the 3 branches of the aortic arch
Brachiocephalic trunk (branching to right CCA & right subclavian)
Left common carotid artery
Left subclavian artery
What is the origin course and distribution of the subclavian artery
O- posterior to sternoclavicular joints and the RIGHT from the brachiocephalic trunk
C- Ascends through thoracic aperture to root of neck (Become axillary arteries after
passing over the lateral/outer margins of rib 1)
5 main branches-
Vertebral
Internal thoracic
thyrocervical
Costocervical
Dorsal scapula
What are the 3 parts of the subclavian artery
1st- medial to anterior scalene
2nd- posterior to anterior scalene
3rd- lateral to anterior scalene
What is the origin course and distribution of vertebral artery
1st part of SC artery and ascends the neck to enter foramen transversium of C6 and ascends to C1 and exits to foramen magnum where it becomes basilar arterys
What is the origin course and distribution of thyrocervical artery
From 1st part of subclavain artery
Has 3 branches suprascapular, transverse cervical, inferior thyroid
I.TH- main artery to neck, TH, layrnx, trachea, esophagus, paraTH, as well as
adjacent muscles
The others go over the anterior scalene with SS to the scapula and the TC to the trapezius
What is the origin course and distribution of internal thoracic artery
From the subclavian artery first part
Branches inframedially to thorax
What is the origin course and distribution of costocervical
From 2nd part of SC artery
ascends then divides into the deep cervical and supreme intercostal
Describe, the origin, course and drainage of the subclavian vein
Continuation of the axillary artery ends when joins the IJV to make braciocephalic vein
What is the sole tribuitary to the subclavain vein
The external jugular vein
What are the anterior and lateral prevertabal muscles
Anterior
Longus coli
longus capitis
rectus capitis anterior
anterior scalene
Lateral
Rectus capitis lateralis
splenius capitis
levator scapulae
mid and post scalenes
(all the ones in post. tri. pretty much)
Actions of the prevertable muscles
Flex head and neck
Longus coli, splenius capitis and levator scapulae rotate head
