What are the 3 compartments of the neck and what in them
Visceral - trachea oesophagus Thyroid/ParaTH gland
Vascular- Carotid sheath IJV ICA CN X
Vertebral- Contains cervical vertebrae, spinal cord, muscles & cervical nerves
what are the types of fascia
superficial and deep
what are the deep fasciasand what do they cover
investing- surrounds neck completly
prevertabal- is the vertebral part
pretracheal- is the visceral part
Boundaries of the posterior triangle
Anterior- posterior border of SCm
posterior- Anterior border of trapezius
inferior- Middle third of clavicle
Apex- superior nuchal line of occipital bone
roof- deep cervical fascia and platysma and superficial fascia and skin
floor- prevertebal fascia
attachments nerve supply and action of the SCM
O- sternal head, manubrium
Calvicular head, superior surface of medial 3rd of clavicle
I- lateral surface of mastoid processs
Acton- draws head forawrd and tilts head toward ispilateral shoulder
Nerve- CN XI
attachments nerve supply and action of the trapezius
O- superior nuchal line and external occipital protuberance
I- lateal third of the clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Action- Assists in rotationg scapula during abduction of humerous, upper fibres elevate and middle adduct & lower depress scapula
Nerve- CN XI
Contents of posterior triangle
Across the SCM- EJV, Greater auricular nerve and transverse cervical nerve
In triangle:
muslces- anterior middle and superior scalene muscles, levator scapulae, splenius
capitis, inferior belly of omohyoid ( splits it into occipital and subclavain
triangle)
Nerves- Accessory nerve CN XI, supraclavicular nerves, trunks of brachial plexus,
phrenic nerve
Vessels- Occipital artery, transverse cervical artery and vein, subclavian artery and vein, EJV
What lies in the carotid sheath
CCA, ICA, IJV and vagus nerve CN X
