Root Hair Cells: Flashcards
How are root hair cells specialised?
Root hair cells are specialised to take up water by osmosis and take up mineral ions by active transport from the soil as they are found in the tips of the roots.
What is active transport?
The movement of dissolved molecules into or out of a cell through the cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration.
Do root hair cells have a large or a small surface area and why?
Root hair cells have a large surface area due to root hairs, meaning more water can move in.
Why do root hair cells contain mitochondria?
Root hair cells contain mitochondria to provide energy from respiration for the active transport of mineral ions into the root hair cell.
What does the permanent vacuole in the root hair cell affect?
The large permanent vacuole affects the speed of movement of water from the soil to the cell.
