Courtship
Behavior in animals that plays a part in the initial attraction of a mate. These behaviors are often species-specific.
For Example, a peacock dances in order to attract a mate.
Cooperative breeding
A breeding system in which members of an extended family all help in the rearing of offspring.
Pair Bond
Is the strong affinity that develops in some species between a mating pair, often leading to the production and rearing of offspring and potentially a lifelong bond.
Parental care
Is any investment of time and energy in producing reproductively successful offspring. This is often at the detriment of the parent.
k-selection
A reproductive strategy where the parents produce few young and give them lots of parental care. Most young survive.
r-selection
A reproductive strategy where the parents use their energy to produce lots of offspring but give no parental care to their young. most young die early.
Monogamy
A mating system of one male and one female forming an exclusive social pair bond for a period of time.
Polygamy
A Polygamous mating system is where individuals mate with multiple mates. Polygamous mating systems are common When one sex can care for the young.
Sexual Dimorphism
The differences between males and females within a species.
For Example, Males tend to have more colourful or complex appearances in order to appear attractive to females (potential mates).
