General Terms Flashcards
Innate Behavior
A behavior that is determined by genetics alone
Learned Behavior
A behavior that is determined by the organism’s environment. Therefore, learned behaviors vary depending on the individual.
Habitat
An area that has all the conditions to allow for an organism’s survival (i.e. food and water source).
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Adaptation
A biological mechanism by which organisms adjust to changes in their current environment.
Ecological Niche*
Entails the following:
Habitat of the organism
The role of the organism in an ecosystem
Interrelationship of the species with all the biotic and abiotic factors affecting it.
NOT A FAN OF THIS ONE
Adaptive Advantage
A certain behavior or characteristic of an organism which increases its chance of survival and therefore, reproduction in a given environment.
Territory*
An area which an organism or a group of organisms utilize and actively defend.
Home range*
An area that is occupied by members of a species to find food/resources but is not defended
