Sculpture (elements of Greek-Roman culture)
Roman sculptors created realistic portraits in stone; most art was intended for public education; started doing/developing bas-relief or low-relief type of sculptures - images would project from a flat background and it’d tell stories; Greeks were known for beauty and idealization for their sculptures; Romans learned the art of sculpture from the Greeks; [portrait sculpture, statues, paintings and mosaics, relief sculptures, fresco paintings]
Philosophy (elements of Greek-Roman culture)
Romans borrowed much of their philosophy from the Greeks. Stoicism, the philosophy of the Greek teacher Zeno, was especially influential. Stoicism encouraged virtue, duty, moderation, and endurance
Literature (elements of Greek-Roman culture)
Virgil was a poet who wrote three most famous work of Latin literature. He writes to praise and its virtues; The poet, Ovid, wrote light, witty poetry for enjoyment. In Amores, Ovid relates that he can only compose when he is in love; Livy wrote myths of Rome history; Tacitus was a historian that wrote about the goods and bad in Rome
Language (achievements)
Latin was the official language of the Roman Catholic Church into the 20th century. Latin was adopted by different people and developed into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian. They’re called Romance languages due to their common Roman heritage. Latin has also influenced other languages with more than half the words in English have a basis in Latin.
Architecture (achievements)
The arch, the dome, and concrete were combined to build spectacular structures, such as the Colosseum; create larger and heavier buildings with concrete
Engineering (achievements)
Aqueducts were designed by Roman engineers to bring water into cities and towns. Roman architectural forms were so practical they have remained popular. Roman roads were also technological marvels; roads, aqueducts, and arch bridge
