where was the consuls elected from?
• Consuls were elected every year from a group called the Patricians (wealthy nobles)
who were the consuls assisted by?
the Senate (300 older, wealthy men called senators, who held office for life)
Who were the ther people who made up the majority of the population?
the Plebeians
Plebeians influence?
• Plebeians had little influence in the government at first. Gained more rights over 200 years
What are plebeians able to do?
• Able to elect 10 tribunes (officials) who could protect their rights by refusing to pass Senate law

• Rome was not a (true) democracy. Power was in the hands of the rich.
