• Known as the Punic Wars

• However, Romans were not note for having a strong navy. (Carthaginians had one)
• Roman engineers developed the corvus to give the Romans an advantage. Corvus – A hinged bridge with a huge spike on one end.
• Romans finally captured the Carthaginians fleet and took control of Sicily

• Before war, the Carthaginians expanded their territory into Spain and mounted further challenged to Rome.
• Aim – to capture Rome itself by travelling on land.
• General Hannibal and his army landed in Spain and marcherd through the country over the Alps with elephants.
• General Scipio tried to use tactics overcome the elephants
• Rome eventually won.

• After trouble broke out in Carthage, Rome found another conflict.
• Rome invaded Africa, destroying the city of Carthage completely.
• Every building was torn down
• Ground was ploughed with salt (to make it impossible to live/rebuild, cant grow anything, still hard today)
• People were sold into slavery (Carthage diminished)
