Rome vs Carthage:
A
- However, Rome wanted control of Sicily too.
- Between 264BC and 146BC, there were three periods of warfare between Carthage and Rome.
- Known as the Punic Wars

What was the first punic war?
A
- Fought for control of Sicily.
- Much of the fighting was done at sea
- However, Romans were not note for having a strong navy. (Carthaginians had one)
- Roman engineers developed the corvus to give the Romans an advantage. Corvus – A hinged bridge with a huge spike on one end.
- Romans finally captured the Carthaginians fleet and took control of Sicily

Second punic war?
A
- Before war, the Carthaginians expanded their territory into Spain and mounted further challenged to Rome.
- Aim – to capture Rome itself by travelling on land.
- General Hannibal and his army landed in Spain and marcherd through the country over the Alps with elephants.
- General Scipio tried to use tactics overcome the elephants
- Rome eventually won.

Third Punic War:
A
- After trouble broke out in Carthage, Rome found another conflict.
- Rome invaded Africa, destroying the city of Carthage completely.
- Every building was torn down
- Ground was ploughed with salt (to make it impossible to live/rebuild, cant grow anything, still hard today)
- People were sold into slavery (Carthage diminished)
