ROLESS Flashcards
What are three primary roles that individuals can hold, as discussed in the text?
The three primary roles are: homemaker, carer, and worker. These roles each involve different duties and tasks, and people may hold more than one role simultaneously, requiring prioritisation and management.
What are some of the core skills associated with being a homemaker?
Core homemaking skills include physical and cognitive abilities, communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to plan, organise, and budget. They also involve domestic tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry and basic home maintenance.
Why might a person living alone have different demands placed upon them compared to someone living with others?
A person living alone needs to be independent in all the domestic skills however, they would not have the added responsibility of caring for other people that those who live with others might require. Those living with others may have to share or divide responsibilities of the home as well as potentially caring for others.
Briefly describe what an Occupational Therapist (OT) does in the context of helping individuals with role duties.
An Occupational Therapist assesses an individual’s situation, goals, and level of disability to help them establish routines, share roles, reorganise tasks, and train them or teach compensatory techniques. They may also adapt the environment, provide equipment, and offer support to overcome difficulties.
What are three key things a carer needs, according to the document?
A carer needs physical and emotional stamina, warmth, empathy and understanding, and also needs to have realistic selflessness, practicality, good communication skills, and the ability to organize duties. These skills allow them to meet the demands of care without causing burnout and be effective in helping others.
What are some of the physical, emotional and financial challenges faced when parenting a disabled child?
Parenting a disabled child poses physical challenges such as 24-hour care, emotional challenges like dealing with anger and depression, and financial burdens due to medical costs, equipment, and therapy. There can be social strain such as less leisure time and potential sibling rivalry.
What are two significant benefits to working that go beyond just financial gain?
Work offers status, a sense of purpose and worth, and a feeling of responsibility and promotes a positive self-help attitude in a person. It also helps people become self-sufficient and reduces their need to depend on others for support or financial aid.
What are two work-related skills which are expected of a worker by their employer?
Work related skills include having skills required for a role, following a routine and regulations such as dress code, and keeping to a time schedule. Work also often requires personal hygiene, appropriate communication, and behaviour.
Briefly describe the process an Occupational Therapist may use to get someone ready to return to work.
To help someone return to work, an OT works on self-maintenance skills, practices social or life skills, and improves communication and physical skills. They may also build work tolerance through simulated work situations, and work on improving a clients cognitive skills.
How does the role of a student overlap with that of a worker and how might an Occupational Therapist assist a student?
The role of a student is similar to that of a worker as it requires similar skills in structure, routine, social skills, communication, and practical skills. An OT can assess students, advise tutors, assess the environment, and make recommendations to help a student reach their potential.
