A

Put forward by Althusser. The idea that the proletariat must be convinced the system is fair and therefore apparatus are used to essentially ‘brainwash’ people.

What is Repressive State Apparatus?

A

It is actual force or the threat of actual force in order to try and control people who do not agree with the decisions or principles of the ruling class. Repressive state apparatus work alongside ideological state apparatus it is designed to control how people think and behave.

What the the ‘reproduction of class inequality’ idea?

A

Founded by Bourdieu. The idea that each class has its own set of ideas and beliefs called a habitus, and the education system is designed by the ruling class who have an upper class habitus and therefore middle / upper class pupils will be able to access the culture of the school and education system. And therefore worksing class students are less likely to have the right cultural capital needed to succeed at school.

What is the ‘Schooling, repression and hegemonic control’ theory?

A

Discovered by Illich and Freire. Schools are designed to promote conformity and a passive acceptance of the way that things are. Those who do not conform cannot access the higher levels of education such as university.

A

Freire argues that education works through the subordination of students who are thought only to speak when asked to. Freire also argued that students are encouraged to see their teachers are experts in their field so essentially they should listen to them and respect their teachers opinions above your own.

What is the ‘Long shadow of Work’ theory

A

Discovered by Bowles and Gintis. The argument that schools create a hard-working submissive and disciplined work force. They argue that schools mirror the work force also known as correspondence principle, they see meritocracy as a myth and argue the larger factor in determining sucsess is social class, ethnicity and race.
