solidarity - members need to feel themselves to be part of a community - without this cocial life would be impossible as everyone would pursue their own desires - ed does this by transmitting shared beliefs and values between generations - school prepares us for wider society
skills - each thing needs specialist skills - he says that ed teaches individuals the specialist skills and knowledge to play their part in the social division of labour
parsons meritocracy
school is the focal socializing agency - school prepares to move from family to wider society - both based on meritocratic views - equal opportunities and rewards are down to ability and effort
Davis and Moore’s role allocation
schools allocate pupils to future job roles - abilities match their careers
they say inequality is important so that importnat jobs are filled with skilled people
- schools are the grounds in which children can prove their ability and show off
New right view
The new right say people should find their needs in the free market rather than the state as the state cannot meet them. They hold similar views to functionalism in that some people are more talented than others, they both favour a meritocratic system and that the school should socialise pupils into a shared set of values, however they say that ed system isn’t achieving due to state failure. They are criticised for taking a one size fits all view which disregards local needs
Chubb’s and Moe - consumer choice
in a study of 60,000 pupils from low-income families they found that state ed has failed needs of disadvantaged groups as well as failing to produce the skills needed for work. They believe private schools are better as they answer to consumers/parents - PRIVATE schools ask for market systems that favours parents as they help with equipment via vouchers, schools would also have to compete to attract - ed would improve largely

capitalism requires a workforce with the kind of attitudes suited to the workers being exploited through hard work for low pay - eds role is to reproduce an obedient workforce - showed in a study of 237 NY students - schools reward submissive behavior to achieve this
Bowles and Gintis correspondence principal and hidden curriculum
school and work are very similar - teachers and bosses - obedience and authority - correspondence principle - this operates through the hidden curriculum - lessons learned without being taught - pupils become accepting to hierarchy - prepares w/c for exploitation by capitalism
myth of meritocracy
Bowles and gintis argue that despite them feeling exploited a rebellion by the poor is unlikely as education legitimates inequality through the ideology of it as inevitable - meritocracy doesn’t exist as income is determined via families not achievement - justifies the privilege of the m/c - persuades w/c to accept inequality - ed therefore justifies poverty
