physical journey that accounts for ones spiritual journey and strengthens it. set aside time to wholly devote themselves to god
physically demanding ! a better understanding of themselves and their need for god because of this
some places of pilgrimage have links with significant events within the christian faith
can bring views a fresh revelation of god

Lourdes

A

1858 - france, bernadette claimed to have visions of the virgin mary in the grotto fo Massabielle
Many people visit lourdes for healing
over 7,000 healings have been recorded
pilgrams may not always be seeking physical healing -s piritual healing is just as important to christains
may feel that their faith in god is strengthened

Jerusalem

A

jesus lived here towards the end of his life
very imprtant significance - died and resurrected
helps the bible come to life so they can reflect more deeply

some christians time their visit with easter - on good friday they walk along the way of sorrows - this is the route believed to be taken by jesus for his crucifixtion
another focul point - church of the holy sepulchre - where jesus’ body was buried. pilgrams pour oil on the stone of unction and rub this off on a hankerchief to take home as a relic
stone of unction - stone on which his body was laid

walsingham

A

norfolk - lady of the manor had a vision of the virgin mary’s home in nazareth. She was told in her vision to have the virgins home built to how she saw it in her vision

In 12th century - augustine monks made it a shrine and many miracles were claimed to have taken place

Everyday there are eucharisistic services

Vatican city - headquarters of roman catholic church
St peters - largest christian church in the world - built above st.peter, who was the first leader of the early church
This place is significant - a myth is asociated with it which says that whilst fleeing persecution in rome, peter had a vision of jesus who said he was going to be crucified again. Peter returned to rome and requested to be crucified upside down, not wanting to have the same death as jesus. Home of the pope
