18
Q

The problem with the trinity ?

A

Some Christians believe that the trinity leads to the idea that there is more than one God and so puts the monotheism of Christianity in danger - goes against the second of the ten commandments - ‘You shall have no other Gods before me’

19
Q

Trinitarians

A

Jesus instructed his disciples to ‘go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ ( Matt 28:19 )
Jesus is God is in his virgin birth, miracles and resurrection.
In order to save us from our sins, Jesus must be god

20
Q

Explain the trinity

A

The eternal god who was Father, Son and holy spirit made himself known in the central act of the father sending the son and the father sending the spirit. What is God like ? He like the father sending the son and father sending the spirit, they had not been sent before. He sent them to show that these entities had always eternally been part of him. He made himself known to us by reveal this.

21
Q

Why is the trinity important ?

A

Plays a central part in Christians worshiping an unobjectifiable and incomprehensible God and reveals a nature about him, and that is that he is mystical and incomprehensible. ‘THE IDEA OF THE TRINITY DOES NOT SUPERCEDE MONOTHEISM, IT INTERPRETS IT IN THE LIGHT OF …REVELATORY EVENTS AND EXPERIANCES’

  • It also brings humanity face to face with the mystery of god
  • helps humanity recognise the God they see in the bible
  • the trinity also reflects how we can fulfil our image of god - god is a community of persons so the essence of humanity is found in human relationships with other, God and his creation- we must live mutually, generously and justly in order to fulfil an image of god. These relationships must value differences but sameness. These relationships must accept as well as give.
22
Q

Unitarians

A

A minority of christian denominations - trinity could lead to the idea that there is more than one god and go against Christian belief of monotheism. ‘Trinity’ is not mentioned in the bible

Some liberal Christians believe that the idea of god intervene through a virgin birth or miracles does not fit with their view of the universe - God designed the universe with a purpose, he then set it off in motion.

they would say that trinitarianism is a heretic view - that some part of god was converted into the son or that the son was procreated by the father from non-existing substances, that is from a being outside himself, so there was a time when the son did not exist

23
Q

The nicene creed

A

Used by catholics, anglicans and protestant.

Nicene creed ensure that Jesus was god and man.

24
Q

What is genesis

A

genesis is the beginning of creation, which is God. Whilst there are different interpretations of the creation stories, all Christians believe that God created the world EX HILO ( from nothing )

25
Q

Genesis 1 - 6 days JOHN 1

A

By speaking aloud, God calls things into existence
After God creates, it repeats ‘And God saw it was good’ which demonstrates his nature
- ‘the spirit of God was hovering over the waters’
Day 1 - light ‘Let there be light’ ‘he separated the light from the darkness’
Day 2 - Water and sky ‘let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water’
Day 3 - Land and vegetation ‘let dry ground appear’
Day 4 - Sun, moon and stars ‘Let there be lights in the vault’ ‘Let them serve as signs to mark sacred times’
Day 5 - Fish and birds - ‘let the water teem with living creatures’
Day 6 - beasts - ‘God made the wild animals’
‘let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish…’ ‘Be fruitful and increase in number’

26
Q

genesis 2 - creation of man and woman

A

‘God blessed the seventh day and made it holy’
‘Then the lord god formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed…the breath of life’ - because god breathed life into adam they believe this gives them an intangible, spiritual connection with God - this is known as the SOUL.
Unlike everything else, humanity is given a specific purpose. They are accountable to god in a way that no other part of creation is.
‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him’ ‘Then the lord god made a woman from the rib…of the man’
God gives humans DOMINION over the earth - ‘they were both naked and felt no shame’ - doesn’t mean they should exploit the earth. Humans have the role of caretakers of the earth, this is known as STEWARDSHIP

27
Q

The role of the word and spirit in creation

A
  • all three persons of the trinity are present ‘the spirit of god was hovering over the waters’
‘in OUR likeness’ - the spirit is the agent of god in creation.
  • the role of jesus -“ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made. (John 1:1–3)
word becomes flesh when god is incarnated as jesus on earth, The word ( jesus ) has always been there.
28
Q

The spirit - role in creation quote PSALM 33:6

A

By the word of the lord, the heavens were made, And by the breath of his mouth all their hosts

holy spirit not just the creator but also the life giver - ‘The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.’

29
Q

what does the name adam mean ?a

A

humanity

30
Q

What does the name eve mean ?

A

beginning

31
Q

Anthropomorphic God in genesis ?

A

God is portrayed as having human qualities - demonstrates his unqiue realtionship to us as humanity

32
Q

First law given by God

A

‘You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat it you will certainly die’
this ability to choose is free will

33
Q

The role of the word in creation JOHN 1:1

A
  • In the beginning was the word ( God incarnate Jesus )
  • And the word was with God ( word is present before creation of the world and the word is god, demonstrates jesus as one of the three distinct persons of the trinity )
  • Through him, all things were made ( God the son directly involved with creation )
  • In him was life (God is the source of life, without him there would be nothing )
  • The light shines in the darkness ( despite of receiving the light of god, humanity has chosen to disobey God ) ( results in death ) ( relates to ….’and you will certainly die’ if you eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil’
  • The word became flesh ( reference to Jesus’ incarnation )
34
Q

The fall - Genesis 3 ( The end of the perfect relationship with God )

A
  • ‘The serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals…’
  • Serpent suggests that God wants to prevent Eve from gaining the same knowledge as God - ‘your eyes will be opened’ when you eat it ‘ you will be like God, knowing good from evil’
  • Eve is tempted by fruit because it was ‘good for food and also pleasing to the eye’ - she ate it, gave some to adam and then they both realised that they were naked. neither of them take responsibility for their actions
35
Q

What is this first disobedience known as ?

A

Original sin

36
Q

What is this first disobedience known as ?

A

Original sin

37
Q

The consequence of the original sin

A
  • loss of righteousness. Goes from fellowship with God TO the awareness of their nakedness and the knowledge that their former perfection was just a memory.
  • separation from God. Adam fell from a state of innocence and fellowship with God to shame of nakedness, which is a consequence of their disobedience. Because of their shame, they hid from the presence of God. And so as descendents of adam, we now enter the world seperated by god, and are all children of WRATH.
  • Cursed environment - adam’s sin caused the curse against the ground, a change in the way the natural world works. Not just in the garden of eden, his disobedience followed him and so wherever he went so did the ‘painful toil’
  • Physical death - ‘ To dust to were and to dust you shall return’. All of Adam’s descendants shall now experience physical death.
  • Clothes - we can no longer walk before god in innocence because we are living in shame of our nakedness. God’s clothing of adam and eve also reminds us that our salvation does not come to us through our own works but by GOD’S GRACE when he clothes us in his RIGHTEOUNESS, because we have lost ours.
Because of our disobedience death and suffereing entered the world. It is by the suffering of jesus christ that we can gain salvation so that we are no longer condemened to live forever in a fallen world
38
Q

What eschatological quotes relates to the reversal of the curse in genesis ? REVELATION 21:4

A

'’He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

39
Q

Genesis : all christians believe that…

A
  • God created the universe
  • God acted out of love and goodness. He cares for his creation even if it is broken and sinful
  • Human beings are made in his image but lack his perfection which they lost.
40
Q

Literal interpretations - FUNDAMENTALISTS/CREATIONISTS

A

Liberalist christians
The bible is inspired by god and god’s word is infalliable because it is the word of god and so it must be the absolute truth.
- God’s actual words and an accurate historical account.
- Reject science - the world WAS made in 6 days
- the world is 5,700 years old- Reject the theory of eveolution

41
Q

Allegorical interpretations of genesis - conservatives

A
  • elements of the narrative of symbols
  • Used to convey important truths
  • Evidence - scientific evdience has shown that the earth is billions of years old. Genesis cannot literally be true
  • Theistic evolution - life developed through the process of evolution. Evolution was a process started by God - a mechanism by which god brings about life.
  • God’s time is not the same as our time - 6 days should not be taken literally
  • a poetic narrative of how evil came into the world.
