Rocks Flashcards
Igneous
Made from magma cooling
Crystallised
Basalt is extrusive (cools on the surface) small crystals as it cools quick
Granite is intrusive (cools underground) big crystals as it cools slowly
Sedimentary
Weathered igneous rock is transported by rivers to the sea and over long periods of time is built up in layers Compaction Fossils are found inside then Chalk Limestone
Metamorphic
Formed by heat and pressure of sedimentary rock
Marble
What happens at oceanic and continental plate boundary
Oceanic is thinner than the continental crust, but it is denser (heavier), so it subducts under it
Oceanic is a lot younger
The subduction and melting of sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock does what
Turns it all back into magma (igneous) rock and the process starts again
How is a Cuesta and chalk escarpment formed
Under the sea, earthquakes cause it the to rise above sea level, earthquake forces the clay and chalk to move to a 45 degree angle, the clay is then eroded quicker then the chalk leaving dips in the landscape. Steep slip is a scarp slope and shallow slope is a dip slope.
