rock cycle revision Flashcards
sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and how it happens
what are the 3 types of rock
sedimentary
igneous
metaphoric
name 2 examples of metaphoric rock
marble and gneiss
Name 2 examples of sedimentary rock
Sandstone
Slate
Name 2 examples of igneous rock
granite and basalt
how are sedimentary rocks made?
Rocks are weathered(broken up) then the erosion moves bits away, these are transported by ice water or wind(these bits are then called sediments), if the wind or water slows down its deposited or ice melted, then the minerals disslove in the water to make crystals which is what cement is for, compaction then squeezes the water out then finally more layers of sediment are deposited, this conpacts the sediments below
how are igneous rocks formed?
they are made from through the cooling of magma(lava) when its hot molten rock rises to the surface it then changes temperature and pressure that cause it to cool, solidify and crystalize
what are the differences between extrusive and intrusive igneous rock
extrusive- cools faster, so crystals are smaller
intrusive- cooled, formed slowly inside, so crystals are bigger
which type of rock contains fossils?
sedimentary
Which type of rock forms molten magma cools at the earth’s surface
igneous
how are metmorphic rocks made?
by the heat but also pressure of existing igneous or sedimemtary material to a more denser form
