Determining that the helicopter is safe for flight is the ____________________________
Responsibility of the pilot in command
What does rigid in-plane mean?
It means that the blades are free to move up and down, but they are “rigid” in the plane of rotation meaning that they can’t lead and lag.
What does teetering mean?
It means that the blades “teeter” like a see-saw would. If one goes up, the other goes down, in normal operation.
What is the primary reason for derating a helicopter engine? (2 reasons)
Primary reason: To increase the altitude capability of the helicopter. If a 160 hp (O-320-B2C) is derated to 145 BHP, it will produce 145BHP all the way to the critical altitude.
Secondary reason: higher reliability and longer engine life.
