Robbins 25 Flashcards
3 layers of skin
- Epidermis: keratinocytes (squamous epithelial cells)
- Dermis: CT/vessels
- SubQ fat (hypodermis or subcutis)
5 layers of epidermis
Come, Let’s Get Sun Burned
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
Stratum Corneum
- Keratinized dead anucleated cells
- Fill with keratin filaments
What is stratum lucidum
Clear layer of dead skin cells only found in:
- lips
- palms
- soles of feet
What is stratum granulosum?
Keratohyalin granules that form keratin filaments
Stratum spinosum
Desmosomes that form spines
What is stratum basalis
Single layer of cuboidal stem cells in contact with basement membrane: keratinocytes and melanocytes
What is used in pathology to ID keratinocytes?
Ab to various cytokeratins
What type of cells are epidermis of skin?
Stratified squamous epithelium
What does the dermis of the skin contain?
- BV,
- Nerves,
- Adnexa (hair follicles + sebaceous glands + sweat glands/apocrine and eccrine glands.
What are skin adnexa (appendages)?
Structures derived from skin and adjacent to it. Includes
- Hair follicles
- Sebaceous glands
- Sweat glands
Keratinocytes are found in what layer of the skin?
Basal layer of skin
Where are melanocytes located?
What are they?
- Basal layer of epidermis
- Specialized secretory cells derived from NC that make melanin (in melanosomes)
- Melanosomes are then transferred to keratinocytes
