stage 1 actus reus
The D must have committed a theft (Robinson)

Stage 2 actus reus
The D must use force or the threat of force
(Dawson) any amount of force is enough
-indirect force (Clouden)
-Threats of force (B&R v DPP)
Stage 3 actus reus
force must be used immediately before or at the time of the theft
(Hale) appropriation is a continuing act, as long as force takes place at some point, this is enough
stage 4 actus reus
force must be used in order to steal (Lockley)
Mens rea
Mens rea of theft must be established “This has already been established above”
intention to use force or the threat of force (Mohan)
