What must urgent duty driving be?
Justified in response to the threat
How is safety prioritised when driving?
Recognizing that no duty is so urgent that it requires the public or police to be placed at unjustified risk
Overarching principal?
Public and police employee safety takes precedence over the necessity to undertake urgent duty driving
What s a critical incident?
Force or threat of force is involved
Risk of serious harm
Responding to people in the act of committing a crime
Field supervisor role for urgent duty driving?
Manages police performance re driving
Identifies and manages health & safety risks to those staff
Reports policy breaches
Investigates and reports crashes of a Police vehicle
Supervisors role during a pursuit?
Maintain supervisory oversight
Provide support to staff, avoid direct involvement
Continuously perform own TENR
Direct abandonment if TENR identifies risk outweighs initial threat
Actions on abandoning a pursuit?
Acknowledge the direction to abandon
Reduce speed to increase distance
Deactivate warning devices once below speed limit
Stop as soon as safe to do so
Advise controller stationary and location
Stop searching for offending driver
Resume normal duties
Supervisor responsibility after a pursuit?
Hot debrief with comms
Ensure fleeing driver notification and NIA records completed before end of shift* (within 5 days)
Complete notification on behalf if resulted in serious injury or death
Review the notification
Health and safety reporting
Ensure investigation commenced

May stop a vehicle for as long as necessary to complete the exercise or obtain particulars.

When can a constable close a road?
Reasonable cause to believe:
Public disorder exists or is imminent
Danger to a member of the public exists or may be expected near that place
Offence 10+ years has been committed or discovered at or near that place
