RNAV Flashcards
What does RNAV stand for?
Area Navigation
The 2 types of RNAV?
- Basic RNAV (B-RNAV)
2. Precision RNAV (P-RNAV)
What is the B-RNAV accuracy requirement?
Within 5nm on 95% of occasions
What is the P-RNAV accuracy requirement?
Within 1.0nm on 95% of occasions
What are the 3 levels of RNAV and the specifications ?
- 2D RNAV which provides navigation in horizontal plane only.
- 3D RNAV provides the same as 2D RNAV with the addition of guidance in the vertical plane
- 4D RNAV provides the same as 3D RNAV plus a timing function
Define the CLC
The course line computer is the heart of a RNAV system based on VOR/DME beacons. It is simply a computer which continually solves for the unknown side of a triangle using basic trig.
It is often called a rho-theta system.
What does rho refer to?
Distance
What does theta refer to?
Bearing from the VOR
What is the full scale CDI indication when using RNAV?
1 dot = 1nm
Full scale deflection = 5nm or more
RNAV can only be used for approach procedures when?
The initial and final approach waypoints are within 25nm of the VOR/DME
The range to a required waypoint presented by RNAV system is:
plan range or slant range depending on RNAV settings.
A basic 2D RNAV system will determine aircraft position using:
VOR/DME
How does a VOR/DME Area Navigation system selects the DME-stations to be used for positioning?
The VOR/DME Area Navigation system has its own NAV tuner and the system itself tunes the DME stations providing the most accurate position.
