Q

Epidemiology of Rhinovirus infections

A

1) Infections is limited to the UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT (<33C)
2) A single virus is often sufficient to cause a cold: enters through nose, mouth, eyes
3) ICAM-1 is the receptor. infected cells release histamine and brdykinin : “runny nose”+ rhinorrhea. Cytokines -> ICAM-1
4) Transmission of the virus: Aerosol, formites, or hand to hand contact
- viable for hours outside the body. Asymptomatic persons
- most commonly transmitted by direct person-to-person contact
5) People acquire some immunity against serotypes that have infected them
- The number of infections tends to dedcrease with age
- Herd immunity in isolated populations
- BUT: Mutations, new serotypes, poorly persistent humoral response

Q

Treatment of Rhinoviruses

A

1) PLECONARIL can reduce the severity and duration of colds
- Must be taken at the onset if symptoms
2) Other medications can help relieve the symptoms: Antihistamines, decongestants, pain relievers

Prevention of Rhinoviruses

A

1) Antosepsis: Handwashing is the most important preventive measure
