What is the causative agent?
Blastomyces Dermatitidis
Where in the world?
Endemic - US, North of Canada
-Outbreaks: Latin AMerica, Africa, Asia, Europe
Where in the earth?
Found in soils rich in Organic matter.
Transmission
Inhaled, a small number causes disease.
Clinical Diseases
1) Pulmonary Blastomycosis
2) Cutaneous Blastomycosis
3) Osteoarticular Blastomycosis
4) Meningitis
Explain Pulmonary blastomycosis
1) Most common manifestation
2) Asymptomatic
3) Non specific
4) It resolves but may become chronic: Purulent lesions develop, death of tissues and cavity formation.
5) Symptoms:
- Deep productive cough
- Chest pain
- Respiratory failure and death occur in AIDS patients.
Cutaneous Blastomycosis
- Painless lesions (pus filled, raised sores) on the face
