RNA Nucleic Acid structure/function Flashcards
RNA is a polymer of what monomer?
Nucleotide
What is a nucleotide formed from?
A pentose sugar (ribose), a nitrogenous base and a phosphate group
What are the nitrogenous bases in RNA?
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Uracil
What is the difference between DNA and RNA nitrogenous bases?
RNA has teh base uracil in place of thymine. Whereas DNA has thymine instead of uracil as a nitrogenous base
What is the function of RNA?
The function of RNA is to copy and transfer the genetic doe from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes. Some RNA is also combine with protein create ribosomes
What are the differences between RNA and DNA monomers?
DNA contains the base thymine quedaras RNA contain uracil instead
DNA contains the pentose sugar deoxyribose, whereas RNA contains the pentose sugar ribose
What are the differences between RNA and DNA polymers?
DNA is much larger because it contains approx. 23 000 genes whereas RNA is much shorter because it is only the length of one gene
DNA is double stranded whereas RNA is single stranded
