RNA Flashcards
RNA
made up of nucleotides and has a ribose backbone
Base Pairings of RNA
Adenine - Uracil
Cytosine- Guanine
DNA-RNA Similarities
both have nucleic acids
composed of nucleotides
sugar-phosphate backbone
four different types of bases
Where are DNA & RNA found?
DNA – nucleus
RNA – throughout the cell
What are the functions of DNA & RNA?
DNA – stores genetic information
RNA – assists in the processing of genetic information
What bases do DNA & RNA have?
DNA – deoxyribose base
RNA – ribose base
How many strands are DNA & RNA?
DNA – double stranded
RNA – single stranded
What do DNA & RNA produce?
DNA – transcribed to produce RNA
RNA – involved in gene regulation and protein production
mRNA (messenger)
produced in the nucleus, where DNA serves as a template for it’s formation
mRNA function
carries genetic information from DNA to the ribosome in the cytoplasm
rRNA (ribosomal)
produced using DNA as a template in the nucleolus
rRNA function
reads the genetic information to make proteins at the ribosomes
tRNA (transfer)
produced in the nucleus, where DNA serves as a template for its formation
tRNA function
transfers amino acids to the ribosomes in the order dictated by the mRNA
small RNA
make up several classes of RNA that perform other tasks in the cell
ex. splicing mRNA, modifying rRNA, marking some RNA for destruction, etc.
