Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
Homeostasis
A
the ability to maintain a relatively consistent internal environment
2
Q
Negative Feedback
A
when the body responds to a stimulus with an intensity relative to that of the stimulus, but in the opposite direction
3
Q
Example of Negative Feedback
A
body temperature exceeds 37 degrees Celsius (stimulus) –> nerve cells in skin and brain (sensor) tells temperature regulatory center (control) to activate sweat glands throughout the body (effector)
4
Q
Positive Feedback
A
mechanism that brings about change in one direction; starting signals are increasingly amplified until a process is pushed to completion
4
Q
Examples of Positive Feedback
A
childbirth, blood clotting, menstrual cycle
