Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue
– consists of tightly packed cells that form a continuous layer
– usually has protective function
– also may carry out secretion, absorption, excretion, and filtration
Basement Membrane
thin layer of carbs and proteins that connect the epithelium to the underlying connective tissue
Simple Squamous Epithelium
– allow exchange of substances
– found in walls of blood vessels and the lining of the lungs
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
found in glands
Simple Columnar Epithelium
lines the digestive tract and uterine tubes
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
doesn’t have true layers, but looks like in places like there are two cell layers
– lines the trachea
Stratified Epithelium
– have layers of cells
– only the bottom layer touches the basement membrane
– found in outer layer of the skin, and in the cavities of the nose, mouth, esophagus, anal canal, and vagina
