RM: Validity Flashcards
What is validity?
Whether an observed effect is genuine and represents the real world
What is internal validity?
Control within a study (eg. reducing demand characteristics)
What is external validity?
Generalising to other settings, populations and eras
What is ecological validity?
Can findings be generalised from one setting to another? Particularly everyday life and relate to realism
What is temporal validity?
Findings should be consistent and remain true over time
How can validity be tested?
Concurrent validity
Face validity
Temporal validity
What is temporal validity?
Findings should be consistent and remain true over time
What is face validity?
Assess if a test looks like it measures what it claims to by eyeballing the measuring instrument or giving it to an expert
What is concurrent validity?
Findings compared to well established tests and correlation is found (should be above + 80.0)
How to increase validity in experiment?
Use control groups, blind procedures and standardisation
How to increase validity in questionnaires?
Use lie scales to detect social desirability bias and respondents should be assured that all their answers will remain confidential
How to increase validity in observations?
Use defined and operationalised categories
How to increase validity in qualitative research?
Interpretive validity through coherence of reporting and inclusion of direct quotes from ppts
Use triangulation which involves using a number of different sources as evidence
