Getting permission by asking ppts to sign a consent form
What is the problem with informed consent?
May reveal aims of the study and reduce validity
What are the types of informed consent?
Presumptive
Prior general
Retrospective
What is presumptive informed consent?
Asking a similar group
What is prior general informed consent?
Ppts agree to be deceived
What is retrospective informed consent?
Getting consent after the study
What is deception?
Deliberately misleading or withholding information so consent isn’t informed and ppts need to be debriefed at the end

What is protection from harm?
Ppts should be at no more risk than they are in real life
What rights to ppts have to protect them from harm?
Withdraw
Assured that their behaviour is normal
Provide counselling if needed
What is privacy and confidentiality?
Ppts have the right to control information about themselves and if this is invaded confidentiality should be respected
What is included in privacy and confidentiality?
Personal details protected
Refer to initials and numbers
Data can’t be shared
