RM: Probability + significance Flashcards
What is the R rule?
If there is an R in the name of the test, the calculated value needs to be more than the critical value in order for results to be significant
What is the null hypothesis?
States that there is no difference or correlation between conditions and accepted if results are non significant
What is probability?
Measure of the likelihood that a particular event will occur
What is calculate value?
Result from test
What is critical value?
Value from table
What levels of significance is used?
Usual value of significance is 0.05 but 0.01 if lives depend on the results or rare study (one off)
What is a type 1 error?
Null hypothesis is rejected and alternate accepted when null is true (difference is found when it doesn’t exist)
When does a type 1 error occur?
When level of significance is too lenient
What is a type 2 error?
Null hypothesis is accepted but the alternate is true
When does a type 2 error occur?
When level of significance is too stringent
