RM - Mathematical skills Flashcards
What is a fraction?
A part of a whole number such as 1/2 or 3/4.
How do you make a fraction more comprehensible?
Reduce a fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the lowest number that divides into both (the lowest common denominator).
e.g. 40/120 = 1/3
What does ‘per cent’ mean?
‘Out of 100’
What is a percentage?
An amount out of 100.
How do you change a fraction to a percentage?
Divide the numerator by the denominator.
19/36 —> 0.52777778
To make this into a percentage we then multiply by 100.
52.777778%.
What is a ratio?
How much there is of one thing compared to another thing.
What are the two ways of expressing a ratio?
A part-to-part ratio, e.g. 4:1 so 4 out of a total of 5 matches will be won.
A part-to-whole ratio, e.g. 4:5 so 4 out of a total of 5 matches will be won.
How can a part-to-whole ratio be changed into a fraction?
E.g. 4:5 = 4/5
Why is it good to estimate a result of a calculation first?
Because then you can detect if you make a mistake.
What makes dealing with large numbers easier/clearer?
Use significant figures and therefore focussing on the order of magnitude. Then using standard form.
