RM - Experimental design (AO3) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the weaknesses of independent groups?
A
- Participant variables occur as diff. groups complete each condition (ind. diff.s)
- Larger sample required - more time and money
2
Q
What are the strengths of independent groups?
A
- Fewer order effects as each p only doing 1 condition
- Reduced demand charac.s as unaware of 2nd condition
3
Q
What are the weaknesses of repeated measures?
A
- Order effects - Do same task more than once and do better/worse due to boredom, fatigue or knowing what to do, confounding variable
- Demand charac.s as ps more likely to realise the aim of the study
4
Q
What are the strengths of repeated measures?
A
- No effect of p variables as scores compared
- Fewer ps needed - quicker and easier to get sample
5
Q
What are the weaknesses of matched pairs?
A
- Difficult to obtain well-matched groups
- Time consuming to match ps - less economical
6
Q
What are the strengths of matched pairs?
A
- Reduced effect of participant variables due to matched charac.s
- No order effects
